Virginia L. (Sutliff) Van Der MeulenJuly 11, 2017
VAN DER MEULEN, Virginia L. (Sutliff) of Dorchester, July 11, 2017. Also known as Aunt Ginny. She was proud to be a lifelong resident of Dorchester. She was the beloved wife of the late Edward J. Van Der Meulen . Loving sister of Arthur Sutliff of Quincy and the late Dorothy Sutliff of Dorchester and Paul Sutliff of Brighton. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and a wide circle of caring friends.
She was active in the Cedar Grove Civic Assoc., where many years ago, along with her husband Ed, formed "The Friends of Cedar Grove Cemetery". Ginny organized a yearly mass in memory of the deceased, held in the Chapel at Cedar Grove on Memorial Day weekend and Christmas weekend. This mass began in 1980 and several years later a donation fund started for the "Mothers Love Statue". Soon thereafter, chimes were installed which still today ring upon the arrival of a funeral as well as every day a noon and 4pm. She was also instrumental in the elections of many political candidates, organizing their campaigns from her kitchen and holding events in her home. Special prayers go to the late Fr. James Lane and Fr. James Fratus, both deceased, and to Fr. John Connolly who was the former Pastor at St. Brendan's parish. Their kindness will always be lovingly remembered. In lieu of flowers, donations will be greatly appreciated. Please send remembrances to The Friends of Cedar Grove Cemetery, 920 Adams St., Dorchester, MA 02124. These will go towards renovations of Ginny's beloved chapel. A special "thank you" goes to the many people for the blessing of love they gave her. Ginny had many friends in her life and she was especially grateful to the people who cared for her during her late years, allowing her to remain in her home. She will be missed by all who knew her. Visiting hours omitted. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday morning at 10 o'clock in the Gilman Chapel in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
