June Zuroms, of Milton, went into eternal rest on Thursday, January 14, 2021, one day after her 90th birthday, at All American Assisted Living in Wareham. She is survived by her sister, Billie Dobek, of New Britain, CT, eleven nieces and nephews, twenty great nieces and nephews, and eighteen great-grandnieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Beatrice and Joseph Zuroms; her sisters, Ruth Canzonetti and Virginia Maheras; her brother, John Zuroms; and her niece, Andrea Canzonetti Griffen.
Born in Dearborn, Michigan, June spent the majority of her life living in South Boston and Milton, Massachusetts. A graduate of South Boston High School, she earned a nursing degree from Boston City Hospital in 1953. For forty years, June worked as a highly esteemed registered nurse; for one year at New Britain General Hospital and the remaining thirty-nine at Boston City Hospital. As the evening charge nurse of the operating room, she was revered as a local hero through her work, which included being part of the team that performed emergency surgery on the legendary Muhammad Ali, as well as her role in groundbreaking surgeries which made national headlines.
June’s natural tendency to care for people extended far beyond her work as a registered nurse. For over seventy years, she served as the loving caregiver for several of her family members. Affectionately known as “Auntie”, June’s pride was her many nieces and nephews, their children, and grandchildren. A devoted Catholic, June was an active member of St. Elizabeth’s parish in Milton, where she served as a eucharistic minister. During the latter part of her life, June enjoyed spending quality time with her great-grandnieces in Connecticut and Falmouth. June was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, and Boston Bruins. A life-long learner, she was a passionate reader, who loved murder mysteries, game shows, card games, scrabble, and traveling, specifically to Aruba, Florida, and England. Upon retirement, June thrived on road trips to Cape Cod and Connecticut to visit family, as well as trips to Foxwoods Casino with her sister Billie.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to All American Assisted Living at Wareham and Continuum Hospice for their kindness, compassion, and skilled assistance, especially during these unprecedented times. The family also extends sincere gratitude to June’s niece, Judi Berg, for her unwavering care for June in her final years. A private funeral will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 11:30 at St. Elizabeth Church, in Milton, MA. A celebration of life will be held at a later date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that a donation be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN., 38105 in memory of June.
