DORNHOFFER – Margaret H. (Doubleday), age 79, of Dorchester, formerly of Norfolk, England, entered eternal rest Sunday, January 1, 2023.
Dorchester's English rose has withered only to flourish again in the new life. Our mum was born in a small village in the beautiful countryside of Norfolk, England. She moved to the United States in the late 1960s, not knowing a single soul but determined to make her way, working as a nanny.
She met her husband, William "Bill" Dornhoffer, and was married in 1970. They settled in Dorchester in the St Marks neighborhood and raised a family.
Mum worked for many years as a hostess and banquet/event planner in the restaurant industry. She started with Blinstrub's on Gallivan Blvd and stayed on when it tuned to Phillips Old Colony House. She ended her career at The Neighborhood Club of Quincy after many years of dedicated service to the staff and members.
Being English, she inherently loved gardening and always had the nicest garden on her street. So much so that she was a senior finalist for the Mayor's Best City Garden contest a few years ago. She enjoyed candlepin bowling, sewing, and knitting. If you were fortunate, you may have received a pair of her famous hand. Knitted slippers .
Her greatest passion was performing; she was involved in the local variety shows held at St Mark's. She loved food, the beach, traveling to different areas of the USA, and going back to the country of her birth to show her children where she originated from.
Most notable is that she enjoyed people, being around them, conversing with them, and getting to know them. People would often comment, "Your mother is beautiful," "She is a classy lady," or "She is always so nice to me when I talk with her." Mum was all these things and more; she cared for everyone and brought a sparkle to people's lives.
She will be beyond missed by many but will live on in our hearts and souls.
We encourage you to please share memories and stories about her.
